For years companies and universities have invested video conferencing technologies. Business thinkers discussed the strengths and weaknesses of virtual teams and none doubted their growing importance in a globalized market. It was however the Covid-19 pandemic and the world-wide stay-at-home orders have become the driving force for increased acceptance of remote work and regardless of how and when things will normalize, the proof of concept is there. Companies have seen that a home-office labor force can be productive. They have realized the huge savings potentials in office space and travel costs.
This does not mean that physical presence will no longer be required of a majority of the work force but remote work, virtual teams and by extension, the need for managers skilled in leading remote teams, will forever coexist with traditional models of work.
This seminar will deepen the participant’s understanding of the dynamics of remote teams, will sensitize them to the challenges in leading such teams and will equip them with the tools and techniques needed to lead these teams effectively.
Seminar content
- Review of the remote work environment (e.g. technologies, trends, challenges, advantages, etc.)
- Dynamics of remote teams (e.g. competencies & capabilities, attitudes, morale, etc.)
- Leadership skills for a virtual environment (e.g. building trust, managing performance, influencing, delegating, onboarding, etc.)
- Effective communication (e.g., best practices, overcoming barriers, feedback culture, etc.)
- Self-Manage in the Home-Office (e.g. Challenges & opportunities, Smart Goals, Action-Priority Matrix, Time Wasters and interference, work-life balance, dealing with change and disruption, resilience, etc.)

- Formulate their own particular remote leadership style
- Navigate their teams through the uncertainty of the current work environment

- Become more resilient when dealing with rapid change and uncertainty.
Teaching and learning method
This is an online seminar consisting of 3 sessions lasting 2.5 hours each.Participants will receive prework to maximize the outcome of this compressed format. Seminar materials will be made available through Dropbox. The video conferencing app Zoom will serve as our medium of interaction.
The format of the seminar is a facilitated workshop driven by business cases, discussions and presentations. To personalize the learning experience participants will be asked to reflect on their own experiences and will keep a development log. Small group activities will be done via Zoom’s Breakout Room feature.
Required technical equipment
The seminar will be held via Zoom, the participants will receive the relevant link some days prior to seminar start.
Internet connection, headphones and speakers, if possible a camera (not obligatory).
On the lecturer
Chris Newman is an experienced executive trainer, consultant, coach and educator with a demonstrated history of forging stimulating and transformative learning experiences. Strong management and leadership skills applied to the areas of business development, organizational development and change management.
He worked for Ernst & Young, Cap Gemini, Ericsson and universities, including Webster Private University Vienna, Fachhochschule Wiener Neustadt and Donau Universität Krems. Today he is a network partner and trainer for Lighthouse-Organizational Development (www.lighthouse-od.at) and Conos GmbH (www.conos.at).
Having lived, worked and studied in Europe, the US and Asia, he brings a multi-cultural perspective to his work and is fluent in German and English.
